Become a Foster Carer

What does fostering entail?

Joey's Legacy Rescue & Rehoming do not have a rescue centre. We are a foster based rescue, meaning our dogs stay in the homes of volunteer foster carers until they are adopted. Fostering an animal can help them recover from neglect, abuse, illness or injury. These are the first steps towards finding a new, loving forever home.

  • Foster carers will need to be experienced with owning dogs
  • Foster carers will need to have an understanding of how our rescue works. Please have a read of our rehoming procedures HERE to familiarise yourself if you are not already.
  • Foster carers need to be over 21 years old
  • Foster carers will need own transport to be able to take their foster dog to the vets to be neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before adoption (and any medical issues addressed). If you are local to us (Liverpool or Warrington) you will need to use our vets. If you are not in Liverpool or Warrington, then you can use your own vets and we cover the bill.
  • Foster carers with children are accepted
  • Foster carers with other dogs are accepted, providing your dog is neutered
  • Sadly we are not accepting any more foster carers with cats, as we rarely get dogs in who can safely live with cats.
  • Foster carers need to be within an hour or two of Liverpool in case of emergencies.
  • You will need to be in the position to foster a dog for at least 2 weeks, but often longer, to ensure the dog is fully assessed and has received all necessary vet care before the dog is adopted.
  • When it comes to the dog being adopted, you will be required to meet with the adopters, either at your home or at a private hire dog field. We will discuss this with you.
  • There are no costs involved with fostering. We cover all vet bills and although many foster carers provide them themselves we can also give you everything you need, collars, leads, beds, food etc.
